Don’t be frightened! Not all skin care products are dangerous, but there are ingredients that you should avoid. Your facial skin is incredibly delicate, so it is important to treat it with care. Many skin care products contain harsh ingredients and chemicals that may do your skin more harm than good. As you look to purchase new skin care products, here are some ingredients you’ll want to avoid.

Sodium lauryl sulfate

Commonly known as SLS, this ingredient is found in many beauty products and allows products to foam. Although it is derived from coconuts, the ingredient has been linked to skin irritation, organ toxicity and even cancer. It is important to note that only large amounts of SLS can cause these ailments, however, if you are using multiple products containing sodium lauryl sulfate, it may be time to make a switch. When checking your cosmetic labels, SLS may also be listed as sodium dodecyl sulfate, sulfuric acid, aquarex methyl and others.

Parabens

Parabens allow your skin care products to hide under your skin for months on end. Used as a preservative, parabens enter your body upon use and can manipulate your endocrine function. What does this mean? In some women, it can mean an increased risk of breast cancer. As the parabens being to mimic and manipulate endocrine function, they begin to disrupt your body’s hormones, like estrogen. These parabens make your body struggle to mature normally, causing accumulation. Many skin care brands have taken note of this danger and are labeled as “paraben-free.” Try to buy products that have this distinction and be sure to always read product labels so you can make sure what you are putting on your skin is safe.

Triclosan

Triclosan’s main purpose in many products is to act as an antibacterial agent, to reduce the growth of germs. It is used in a myriad of products, however, even small amounts of the ingredient are dangerous and should be avoided. Triclosan has been linked to health issues like a weakened immune system, abnormal thyroid signaling and reproductive toxicity. While this ingredient has not been banned, the law prohibits companies from not disclosing product ingredients. Take advantage of this and, again, read product labels and keep out a watchful eye for triclosan.

Formaldehyde

You have probably heard of formaldehyde before. Why? Formaldehyde is used during the embalming process and is a known carcinogen, or substance known to cause cancer. Most people avoid formaldehyde by not smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products, as they are commonly found within the items. However, formaldehyde may also be hiding in your hygiene and skin care products as a preservative. Manufacturers may not directly state formaldehyde as an active ingredient but list it under another name. As you look at product labels, search for ingredients such as DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl and bronopol.
